3ds Max 9 - ProBoolean

A very powerful new feature in 3ds Max 9 is ProBoolean. The ProBoolean compound object provides you with modeling tool for combining 3D shapes in ways that would be difficult or impossible otherwise. The ProBoolean compound object takes a 3ds Max mesh and adds extra intelligence to it prior to performing Boolean operations. First it combines the topologies, then it determines coplanar triangles and removes incident edges. The Booleans are then performed not on triangles but N-sided polygons. Once the Boolean operations are completed, the result is retriangulated and sent back into 3ds Max with coplanar edges hidden. The result of this extra work is twofold: The reliability of the Boolean object is extremely high, and the resulting output is much cleaner in terms of having fewer small edges and triangles.


Here is cube of cheese using the ProBoolean function in 3ds Max 9.


Prepare a Box and a sphere .

Select the Sphere. In the Command Panels > Create Panel > Geometry > Compound Objects, turn on Scatter. Then turn on the Pick Distribution Object button, choose Copy under the button, then click on the Box in the viewport. Tune the settings in the panel to get the desired results. Under the Display rollout, check Hide Distribution Object. Then right-click on the resulting object and choose Convert To > Convert To Editable Poly.

Select the original Box object, and choose ProBoolean way down below the Scatter button. Turn on Start Picking, and pick the scattered object we made in the last step.

You can go into the Operands sub-object level to modify (e.g. move) the sub-objects (e.g. the Box and the Scattered Spheres) inside the ProBoolean object.

Check the Make Quadrilaterals checkbox. ProBoolean helps us make neat and tidy sub-divisions on the object.

Apply a Noise modify and tweak the parameters of it.

Set the materials, lighting, camera and then render. Boo~~
(A little "tips and tricks" here as I'd used the Round Corner function of the Arch & Design Material which is also new in 3ds Max 9, to make the "Fillet-Edge-Illusion" of the cheese.)
