Create Door Family

The tutorial will show you how to custom the door family and how to use parameter to control the door open angle. In which it will introduce how to use the "Reference Plane" and associate "Parameter" to dimension.


Step 1 Create new families -> choose ¡§Metric Door¡¨


Step 2 By default setting the ¡§Metric Door¡¨ templates was associated with the door ¡§Height¡¨ and ¡§Width¡¨. The doorframe also was associated with the ¡§Frame Projection¡¨ and ¡§Frame Width¡¨. Try to modify it, the model will update.

Step 3 Create door family - Choose ¡§generic model¡¨ template - Use ¡§Solid Extrusion¡¨ to create the door Notes: The door family will import to metric door family, need to consider the origin; the nested family into another families benefit is the parameter in project file can hide.

Step 4 OK open again the metric door family file -> load the door family by clicking the components from the function keys


Step 5 Place and rotate the door family first

Step 6 Create angular dimension between the reference plane and front face of the door family


Step 7 Highlight the angular dimension and select ¡§Add parameter¡¨ of the option bar

Step 8 Input name of the parameter (e.g. Angle) -> select the Dimensions -> Press Type radio button

Step 9 Picture shows the parameter was successfully associated with the dimension.

Step 10 Open the Family Type dialog box of the design bar on your left hand side

Step 11 Try to change the Angle, click Apply OK!!! Now the angle is depending on the ¡§Angle¡¨ parameters.

Step 12 How to change the door angle when the door loaded into the project file? Just highlight the door -> Click Properties and then click Edit/ New -> Update the parameters ¡§Angle¡¨

For this case, it uses Type for the angle parameter. If the project file has more than one door exist in the file, the angle will exactly same over the project. How to make the door with difference angle?

There have two solutions; The first solution uses Instance parameter instead of Type parameter. What is the different of them?

As above flash shows it was used Type properties.
As above flash shows it was used Instance properties.

The second solution is it need to create the New Family Types; each of it can design difference angle.


Steps Open Family Types -> Click New -> Input the Name -> Change the Parameters


After that you can select which angle you want.
