Key Schedule

by Eric Tang

Revit is a single file database that can be shared among multiple users. Plans, sections, elevations and schedules are all interconnected, and if a user makes a change in one view, the other views are automatically updated. Thus, Revit drawings and schedules are always fully coordinated in terms of the building objects shown in drawings. The short tutorial will show you:
  • How to create the key schedule? How to create the formular & filter in schedule?
  • Shows bi-directional associativity. A change anywhere is a change everywhere!
Step 1 - Create the floor plan, room with tags and the color fill

Step 2 - create the key schedule (click View of function key bar -> click Schedule/ Quantities.. -> choose category (e.g. Rooms) -> click Schedule keys radio button -> assign name for the Key Schedule (e.g. Room Style Schedule) -> click OK)

Step 3 - Schedule Properties

Step 4 - Choose Available fields and click Add --> button

Step 5 - Click New button of the option bar

and input the data to key schedule Key name - it would be the reference key name. for example: the key name column may be the main category (e.g. Room category) Proposed Area column stores the proposed value. for example: the Bathroom design area can't be larger than 100  square meters. Notes: Revit Building automatically fills in the Key name. This is the name that appears among the element's instance properties. If desired, enter a new name.

Step 6 - Create the general schedule (e.g. Room Schedule)

Step 7 - Add the Calculated Value (click the Calculated Value of Schedule Properties -> input the Name (e.g. Different +/-) -> select Formular -> select Area of Type pull-down menu) -> create Formula (e.g. Area - Proposed Area))

Step 8 - Add one more Calculated value (e.g. Percentage %) -> formula (e.g. Area / Proposed Area -1)

Step 9 - Room schedule was completed

Step 10 - Duplicate the room schedule and rename it (e.g. Room schedule - over 10%)

Step 11 - Uses filter to show only the practical value (e.g. only show the data which Percentage (%) is greater than 20%)

Step 12 - Room schedules - Over 20% has assigned the conditional filter, so it only display the values which is greater than 20%

.

Here is the result:
What is the benefit to using key schedule?
  • To minimize the manual input of repetitive information
  • In addition to assisting in the filling out of information, changes are also managed through the use of schedule keys.
  • Schedules, particularly for windows, doors, or rooms, can comprise multiple items that have the same characteristics. A room schedule in particular might have 100 rooms with the same floor, ceiling, and base finishes. Rather than having to enter all that information by hand into each of the 100 rooms in the schedule, Revit Building allows you to conveniently define keys that can automatically fill in information. If a room has a defined key, then as that room is added to a schedule, fields in the schedule automatically update, reducing the time required to produce the schedule.
